The French Tech Visa is a programme that enables international talent in the tech sector to settle in France. Foreign entrepreneurs can obtain a residence permit by launching an innovative business in the country.

There are two ways to obtain resident status: either apply directly for a residence permit or live in France on a long-stay visa for one year before applying.

A startup founder must submit a comprehensive business plan endorsed by a recognized business incubator or accelerator and provide proof of sufficient funds held in a personal bank account.

A residence permit is usually issued for 4 years, although in some cases the validity period may be shorter. A spouse and children obtain residence permits together with the main applicant.

7  benefits of French Tech Visa

Status for the whole family

A startup founder can include their spouse and financially dependent children in the residence permit application. Minor children are also eligible for enrollment in public French schools, allowing families to settle in France comfortably.

Citizenship after five years

After living in France for five years, a foreigner can apply for French citizenship. To qualify, one must live in the country for at least 183 days per year, confirm knowledge of the French language, pay taxes, and take part in public life.

Visa-free travel

With a French residence permit, holders can travel to 29 Schengen Area countries without the need for an additional visa. You can stay in these countries for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, facilitating business expansion, networking, and travel across Europe.

Fast process

Obtaining the residence permit for the French Tech Visa is relatively quick, with processing times between 3 to 6 months. This is faster than some other European countries, such as Spain and Portugal, which can take 6 months or longer to issue their startup visas.

No residence requirements

A foreigner may live permanently in another country while keeping a French residence permit. However, to renew the permit, you must show progress in the development of your startup and confirm that you still have sufficient savings to support yourself.

No investment required

A startup founder does not need to invest in the business immediately. To obtain a residence permit, it is enough to submit a business plan and show savings intended to cover living expenses in France.

Business opportunities in the European Union

A startup founder receives support from a business incubator or accelerator. These programs provide training, mentorship, and guidance in launching the startup. Additionally, incubators and accelerators can help secure funding for the business, increasing the chances of success in the competitive European market.

How to obtain France Tech Visa: step-by-step process

1.

Preliminary check

A Passportivity compliance specialist reviews the visa applicant’s background. The check takes up to two days. The applicant completes a questionnaire and provides a copy of their passport and tax identification number.

2.

Business plan preparation

Passportivity lawyers assist in preparing a startup’s business plan or facilitate participation in an ongoing project. The business plan should demonstrate that the startup is driven by innovation through the creation of novel technologies or enhancement of existing solutions.

3.

Application to an incubator or accelerator

With the assistance of Passportivity lawyers, the startup founder enters into an agreement with a French business incubator or accelerator. The organization drafts a supporting letter on behalf of the startup, which forms part of the visa application submission.

4.

Business plan presentation

The business plan is reviewed by DRIEETS IDF, the Interdepartmental Directorate for the Economy, Employment, Labour, and Solidarity of Île-de-France. DRIEETS IDF evaluates the innovative character of the proposed venture during its assessment process.

5.

Document preparation

Lawyers compile a list of documents based on the applicant’s individual situation. Documents provided by the applicant are translated into French and officially certified (apostilled).

6.

Obtaining a visa to France

The startup founder obtains a French visa through a consulate or visa centre in the country of citizenship or residence and submits biometric data. The visa application is reviewed for up to three months.

7.

Arrival in France

The visa is issued for 90 days or for 12 months. If the visa is valid for 90 days, the startup founder travels to France and immediately applies for a residence permit.

A one-year visa is equivalent to a residence permit. After arrival in France, it is registered on the website of the General Directorate for Foreign Nationals, and government and stamp duties are paid. To exchange such a visa for a residence permit, the foreigner must register a company and begin developing the startup.

8.

Applying for a residence permit

The residence permit application is submitted on the website of the prefecture at the place of residence in France. The startup founder prepares the same set of documents as for the visa and pays government and stamp duties totalling €225.

9.

Receiving a residence permit🔥

The startup founder receives a notification that the residence card is ready and collects it at the prefecture at the place of residence. A residence permit is usually issued for four years, although in some cases the validity period may be shorter.

Yes. Support from an incubator or accelerator is one of the requirements for obtaining the France Startup Visa. as proof of support, the organisation prepares a letter that is included in the visa application package.

No, knowledge of French is not required for obtaining the France Startup Visa or residence permit. However, it is important to learn French if the entrepreneur plans to eventually apply for permanent residence or French citizenship, as language proficiency at least B2 level is required for naturalization.

No. A France Startup Visa applicant only needs to present a business plan. If the investor receives a residence permit immediately, the company can be registered after obtaining status. Holders of a one-year long-stay Startup Visa must register a company and start developing the startup within one year. If they meet these conditions, they can obtain a residence permit.

Residence permits for startup founders in France are usually issued for four years, although in some cases the validity period may be shorter. A foreigner may also obtain a one-year long-stay Startup Visa and apply for a residence permit at the end of its validity period.

The family receives residence permits at the same time as the startup founder. The application may include a spouse and children.

Yes, the spouse of a startup founder holding the France Startup Visa is eligible to work in France. They can also run a business or work for French companies.

Startup founders obtain a residence permit in France within 3 to 6 months. The timeline depends on how quickly the applicant prepares the business plan and secures incubator support, and how long the immigration authorities take to process the application.

To extend a French residence permit, a startup founder demonstrates the project’s progress and provides a further business development plan. They also need to confirm their financial situation again, with at least €23,900 in a personal bank account.

After five years of living in France, a startup founder holding a French residence permit can apply for French citizenship. Time spent on a one-year long-stay Startup Visa counts toward the naturalization period.

Applicants for a French passport must live in France for more than 183 days per year, pay taxes, take part in public life, and confirm knowledge of French at least at B2 level.
